Gameplay
In the 4X turn-based strategy game Civilization VII, the player controls the development of a human civilization from primitive villages to a highly developed culture. Using a variety of units—both military and civilian—the player explores the map, expands their civilization by adding more cities, culture, and technology, gathers resources from the surrounding terrain, and eliminates threats from other civilizations that are also trying to expand. There are several ways for the player to win the game, from peaceful solutions to complete military control of the entire planet.
The player will be able to choose leaders and civilizations separately in Civilization VII, with civilizations favoring leaders who possess particular qualities. The definition of a “leader” has also been revised to include scientists, philosophers, and religious leaders who did not hold the position of head of state. As opposed to the additional divisions used by the game’s forerunners, the historical period system will be reduced to the ancient, exploratory, and contemporary eras. Independent factions—purposefully named to avoid the perceived negative connotations of the term “barbarian” used in earlier games in the series—will arise throughout the antiquity era.
Some of them will develop into city-states based on how the player interacts with them. When switching between eras, the player has to switch their civilization after each era. Players will encounter a “crisis event” after the end of the exploration and antiquity eras, which will result in disadvantages in the periods that follow.
